”My success is your success, my failure is your failure”-Adeniyi, Customs boss, challenges maritime media

–-pleads for support, guidance, collaboration of media
The Eyewitness News
Wale Adeniyi, the Acting Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, has charged the maritime media to work for his success in his onerous task of repositioning the Nigeria Customs as his success or failure will be a collective responsibility between him and the maritime journalists.
The new CGC, in continuation of his strategic engagements and partnership with stakeholders, hosted the cream of the maritime media to a dinner where he solicited their support, guidance, and collaboration.
”I think it would be something of joy if I run this race well and I succeed. Let me also tell you that it would be a collective failure if I fail” Adeniyi charged the media.
In what was a homecoming to his constituency, the new Customs boss freely interacted with the maritime media practitioners, most of whom he knew when he was a two-star Customs officer, and assured them of open door policy.
The new CGC was the former Public Relations officer of the Service during which he established a strong bond of friendship with the maritime press.

‘It is really an experience for me that we started together and God has given me the grace to come this far.
”I want to say a very big thank you to all of you. My meeting you is to come and register my presence with the Lagos press and we know what Lagos means to the Customs.
”I am here to report myself to my colleagues that your former PRO is now the Acting Comptroller General of Customs”, Adeniyi said amid thunderous applause from the elated maritime media.
”I am also here to solicit your support, your guidance, your collaboration, and your partnership in steering the affairs of the Nigeria Customs Service.
”I think it would be something of joy if I run this race well and I succeed. Let me also tell you that it would be a collective failure if I fail. The failure will not be mine alone. It has to be something we all share because I will open my doors to you. It is going to be an open-door system.
”You have the opportunity to come to me and share the direction in which you want Customs to go.
”When I am in charge, it has been like that when I was the PRO and possibly, it would even be better when I am now the Acting Comptroller-General of Customs.
”So I crave your support and I have the focus because I have learnt from so many of the previous Comptroller-General whom I have worked with very very closely and I have learnt best practices of leadership and I hope I will be putting some of these things to use.

”I want to let you know that once in a while, gentle pats here and there, don’t hesitate to call me.
”I pray that I will not disappoint you. I pray that I will be that Comptroller General you wish I will be”, the CGC concluded in a blaze of tumultuous applause.
The maritime journalists in attendance were unanimous in their pledge to support the CGC and ensure he runs a successful race.
”You are our own and we cannot afford to let you fail”, Leye Ajayi, the Chairman of the Lagos State Council of the Nigerian Union of Journalists(NUJ),who ventilated the general opinion of the media, declared.
”There would be no bad press because your success is our success” Ajayi assured, asking the CGC to impress the importance of the press to his Public Relations officers at the command not to underrate any journalist.
It could be recalled that Adeniyi, since his ascension to the enviable position as the CGC, has embarked on stakeholders engagement to seek collaboration and support.

Shortly after his appointment, he met with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and then the National Security Adviser, Malam Nuhu Ribadu. He has equally undertaken the tour of all the units of Customs at the Headquarters where he interacted with officers.
He is expected to meet with his Beninuous counterpart and discuss matters of mutual interests and benefits to both Nigeria and the Republic of Benin.

The Acting Customs Area Controller (CAC) of the Kirikiri Lighter Terminal (KLT) Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Deputy Comptroller Bolaji Adigun, has reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to deepening engagement with stakeholders across the maritime industry in line with efforts to promote trade facilitation, transparency, and sustainable economic growth.
Adigun gave the assurance through the Deputy Comptroller in charge of Administration, Comptroller T.A. Jonah, who represented him during a courtesy visit by the newly elected Executive Committee of the Maritime Reporters Association of Nigeria (MARAN) to the Command in Lagos.
The Acting CAC, who was unavoidably absent, underscored the importance of sustained collaboration between the Nigeria Customs Service and key industry stakeholders, particularly the maritime media, in advancing the Service’s mandate and supporting national economic development.
He described the media as a critical partner in disseminating information on government policies, customs reforms, trade facilitation initiatives, revenue generation, and anti-smuggling operations.
According to him, maritime journalists occupy a strategic position in shaping public understanding and perception of activities within the port and maritime sector, stressing the need for professionalism, accuracy, and balanced reportage in the discharge of their duties.
Adigun further assured the MARAN delegation that the KLT Area Command would continue to operate an open-door policy while fostering cordial and productive relationships with stakeholders within the maritime community.
Earlier in his remarks, the President of MARAN, Mr. Oluyinka Onigbinde, stated that the visit formed part of the association’s ongoing stakeholder engagement initiative following the inauguration of its newly elected executive committee.
Onigbinde explained that the purpose of the visit was to formally introduce the new leadership of the association to the Command and strengthen the longstanding relationship between MARAN and the Nigeria Customs Service.
He commended the KLT Area Command for its contributions to trade facilitation, revenue generation, and enforcement activities, describing the Command as a vital component of Customs operations within Nigeria’s port system.
The MARAN President also reaffirmed the association’s commitment to professional, objective, and development-driven journalism, noting that maritime reporters play a significant role in promoting informed discourse on issues affecting the industry.
He further assured the Command of MARAN’s continued support for initiatives aimed at enhancing efficiency, transparency, and competitiveness within Nigeria’s maritime sector through responsible and factual reporting.
