Delayed conclusion of NPA probe panel hurts maritime industry
“When you have completed your assignment, we will be glad to pass on the report to the President, but don’t forget your assignment will include activities of procurement and its processes from 2016 till date.“And that is why you do not have a time limit. So, it will take you some time. You are not auditing, but finding out the processes” Amaechi has declared while setting up the panel in May this year.
Stakeholders have therefore faulted the ”no time limit” given by the minister as this open-ended time frame is slowing down the operations at the ports.
The president of the Nigerian Importers Integrity Association (NIIA), Godwin Onyekazi, who ventilated the feelings of other concerned stakeholders, said major decisions that should move the industry forward and earn government more revenue have been delayed because the Acting Managing Director of NPA, Mohammed Bello-Koko, is “constrained on several fronts”.
“Go to NPA today and see what is happening.
‘Major decisions are suffering. Sometimes simple approvals for ships to berth are delayed and no one seems to be in charge. Some port concessions have expired but no action is being taken to sign off the renewal’ Onyekazi observed.
