NPA, PEBEC in strategic partnership to boost efficiency, ease of doing business at Nigerian ports

The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has opened  discussions with the  Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council(PEBEC) to enhance efficiency and ease of doing business at at the ports.
The Managing Director of the NPA, Dr Abubakar Dantsoho and his team paid a working visit to the PEBEC Secretariat where the Director General of the Council, Princess Zahrah Mustapha Audu, played host to them.
The session  between the two government agencies centered on improving efficiency and ease of doing business within Nigerian ports with an in-depth walkthrough on the operations of the ports.
The visit ended with a commitment to strengthening the collaboration between PEBEC and NPA to deliver significant results for Nigeria’s business environment.
During the meeting, Dr Dantsoho provided an in-depth tutorial on the operations of the ports, giving the PEBEC team valuable insight.

In return,  Princess  Audu shared her ideas with the NPA team on how to improve on the efficiency of the ports and enhance ease of doing business to engender competitiveness and revenue generation.

The two agencies expressed hope  that the collaborative effort will yield positive changes.

The NPA is responsible for governing and operating Nigeria’s ports, including the Lagos Port Complex, Tin Can Island Port Complex, and others.

It is expected that the partnership between the NPA and PEBEC will lead to significant improvements in Nigeria’s business environment.

Nigeria eyes regional votes to clinch IMO council elections

plans to expand deep blue infrastructure to Gulf of Guinea

As the race to the International Maritime Organization ( IMO) council elections hots up, Nigeria has taken its campaign to clinch the elusive Category C of the  Organization to the Gambia.
At the Fourth Blue Economy Conference in Banjul, where Nigeria joined other West African maritime nations, the  Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, solicited for the support and votes of the regional members country.
Represented by the Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency( NIMASA), Dr Dayo Mobereola, the Minister reminded the participants of the crucial role Nigeria plays in regional integration and how it will protect the interests of the continent if elected into the council.
“Let me take this opportunity to inform this esteemed gathering that Nigeria has formally declared its candidacy for the IMO Council election under Category ‘C’ for the 2026-2027 term.
“We seek the kind support and vote of member states of the Maritime Organization of West and Central Africa (MOWCA) in the forthcoming election at the 34th IMO Assembly Session.
” Nigeria’s representation in the IMO Council will strengthen Africa’s voice in global maritime decision-making, particularly in areas related to the blue economy, maritime safety and security, and environmental sustainability, given the volume of trade conducted in our region,” the minister pleaded.
Meanwhile, Nigeria has expressed its desire to strengthen maritime collaboration with The Gambia to enhance regional security and economic growth.
Oyetola , speaking through the NIMASA DG, emphasized Nigeria’s commitment to expanding its maritime security infrastructure beyond its territorial waters.
He revealed that discussions are ongoing regarding the potential extension of the Deep Blue Project’s operations to cover a wider area within the Gulf of Guinea.

“Nigeria remains committed to being a stabilizing force, fostering cooperation, and promoting sustainable development through the blue economy.

” We are dedicated to ensuring safety and security in the Gulf of Guinea region.
” Given the recent disruption in global trade caused by the crisis in the Suez Canal, there has been a surge in shipping traffic around Africa.
“To address this, Nigeria is working towards extending the operational coverage of its Deep Blue assets to further enhance maritime security,”  Mobereola stated.

Dr. Mobereola also highlighted that Nigeria’s efforts in maritime security have received global recognition.
Both the International Maritime Bureau (IMB) and the IMO have commended the country for its effective deployment of the Deep Blue Project, which has sustained zero piracy incidents in Nigerian waters for the past three years.

Nigeria remains committed to fostering strategic partnerships, strengthening maritime security, and advancing the shared economic interests of West and Central African nations through sustainable blue economy initiatives.

MMIA Customs intercepts passenger with 142 parcels of Cannabis worth N290 million

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) Area Command, has intercepted a passenger arriving from Canada who attempted to smuggle 142 parcels of cannabis, commonly known as Canadian Loud, valued at ₦290 million.
The Customs Area Controller (CAC), Comptroller Effiong Harrison, disclosed this on Tuesday, 18 February 2025, shortly after the seizure at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.
According to him, customs officers identified the suspect during routine profiling due to his suspicious behaviour, prompting a search that led to the discovery of the illicit substance concealed in his luggage.
The CAC underscored the significance of the seizure, stating, “Such substances pose a serious security risk and have a detrimental impact on our youths and the economy.”
He reaffirmed the Nigeria Customs Service’s commitment to national security and the suppression of smuggling, stressing that officers remain resolute in tackling illicit drug trafficking.
Comptroller Harrison further stated that, in line with the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi’s policy of collaboration, the Command handed over the seized drugs, the suspect, and his passport to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and necessary action.
Receiving the suspect and contraband, the Commander of Narcotics and Head of Operations, MMIA Command, Muhammad-Tukur Ahmad, commended the Nigeria Customs Service for its continued collaboration with the agency in safeguarding the country from drug-related crimes and economic sabotage.
“We assure the public of a thorough investigation to uncover all individuals connected to this case.
“Drug interceptions have been recorded at this airport before, and we will ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
” The public will be informed of the investigation’s outcome in due course,” Ahmad stated.

Shippers’ Council tops integrity chart in maritime industry, scores 84.68per cent on ICPC scorecard

The Nigerian Shippers’ Council has been rated the best on the Ethics and Integrity Compliance chart of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission(ICPC) conducted among agencies of government in the maritime industry.
The ranking was conducted by the anti- graft agency within the Ministry of Marine & Blue Economy.

According to the chart, NSC scored  84.68% in the 2024 Ethics and Integrity Compliance Scorecard.

In its letter to the Council, the ICPC praised the organization’s conducive work environment, corruption-free systems, and efficient port services that meet global standards.
The Council’s leadership, under Dr. Akutah Pius Ukeyima ,was commended for promoting efficiency and transparency in the port system.
The Council’s efforts to modernize port operations have resulted in increased productivity, improved performance, and enhanced competitiveness.
